Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, said yesterday that last week’s verdict of the Supreme Court, which affirmed President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s election, deprived Nigeria of another opportunity of starting on a clean slate and correcting the myriad of problems in the country’s electoral system.
Speaking at a news conference in Lagos, Soyinka also said he was returning his national Merit Award Prize money.
He said what was painful about the Supreme Court judgment was that it had opened the door to violent crime in the electoral system, stating that the verdict could generate the kind of crisis that took place in Plateau State recently.
The Nobel Laureate said the apex court had squandered an opportunity to say to Nigeria and Nigerians to be ashamed of themselves, since a country such as Ghana could conduct a peaceful general election.
Soyinka, who maintained that no election took place in the country in 2007, added that for the fact that the Electoral Act was not adhered to was enough reason for the apex court to cancel the presidential election.
He said:“Let us know that there was a minority report and I remember one of the clauses. One of the statements in minority report, which is common to me; we are not lawyers but for God’s sake, we have the common sense that if the electoral law is broken in any way then the election should be null and void.
“You don’t serialise electoral card and then you say …election was held in this nation and the Supreme Court failed us. Failed to say to the nation and those who operated the crime that a crime has been committed against the principle of democracy.”
On the prize money he won from the National Merit Award conferred on him by President Yar’Adua, which his son, Olaokun, collected on his behalf last Tuesday in Abuja, the internationally acclaimed human rights activist said his decision to return the money was arrived at after he learnt of the judgment of the Supreme Court in London.
He said he accepted the award because of the calibre of persons that constituted the committee, insisting that it was not a political award like the National Honours, which he claimed has been turned into a political jamboree.
“You know it is almost 22 years I think when I was awarded, more accurately when I was ambushed at the airport and found myself landed with a national honour. I used the word ‘ambushed’ deliberately because that was exactly what happened. The ambush was prepared and executed by my late friend, Prof. Odie Aboyede, and the Head of State at the time, Gen. Ibrahim Babaginda. So, that was an ambush I had no choice about that and I had just been honoured outside. I could n’t very well say no to a National Honours at the time,” he said.
