THE Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has begun a manhunt for the Managing Director of a new generation bank (name withheld) over an alleged money laundering deal worth N3.2 billion.

Commission’s spokesperson, Mr. Femi Babafemi, confirmed that some officials of the bank were needed for interrogation on the alleged scam.

Nigerian Tribune had exclusively reported the arrest, on Tuesday, of three top officials of the bank over the matter. Apart from the Managing Director of the bank, the commission was also said to be after an accountant with the bank, who is reportedly on the run.

It was gathered that the commission had already sealed off a mansion reportedly owned by the accountant in a high-brow area of a state in the South-South geopolitical zone.

Six exotic cars allegedly found in the premises of the house were also said to have been sealed off with the property. While responding to the Nigerian Tribune’s enquiry, Babafemi said that “I know we are looking for some officials of the bank over an ongoing investigation.”

The move to arraign the detained officials on Thursday was thwarted by the ongoing strike by court workers. However, there were indications that the commission finally secured an order of an Abuja Chief Magistrates’ Court in Life Camp, to remand the accused.

They had been kept in the commission’s detention facility since they were brought into Abuja last Tuesday. In the charge against them, their names were given as Kanu Chimezie, Olakunle Orupe and Patrick Okagwu.

Babafemi confirmed their arrest. The arrest was said to have been in connection with alleged money laundering involving high-profile individuals.

The bank was alleged to have been used in laundering the said money and the three officials picked up were said to have been directly involved in the deal.

Commission’s Chairman, Mrs. Farida Waziri, reportedly ordered a high-profile investigation into the activities of the bank after investigation abroad showed that large sum of money was moved from Nigeria to Europe without the bank reporting to the commission as required by the laws guiding banking operations in the country.

It was gathered that the bank MD would be arraigned once he was picked up.
