POISED to actualise federal government’s commitment to host a successful FIFA U-17 World Cup next year, Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan embarks on a four-day assessment tour of the nine designated venues beginning today.The tour will end on Monday.

The Vice-president, who would be accompanied by the chieftains of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) including the chairman, Alhaji Sani Lulu and the Vice-chairman/CEO, Mainasara Illo, is expected to visit Lagos and Ijebu-Ode today.

According to the LOC’s General Manager, Media, Emeka Odikpo, the tour by the number two citizen whose office now co-ordinates the activities of the LOC, is an affirmation of the importance which the federal government attaches to the hosting of the U-17 World Cup.

“Specifically, the Vice-president wants to personally see the extent of work done in all the nine designated venues. This will give him first hand information on what has been accomplished and what is left undone,” Odikpo said.

The VP’s tour which precedes the next and final inspection visit by FIFA officials scheduled for January 19-26, 2009 is to ensure that all relevant requirements set by FIFA are clearly met.

“The federal government does not want half measures and there is no demonstration of this position than the Vice-president’s acceptance to embark on this tour in spite of his busy schedules. The LOC on behalf of all Nigerians is poised to host the best U-17 World Cup ever in 2009.”
