The House of Representatives on Thursday hinted that it would not join the Senate in quickly passing the 2009 Appropriation Bill, stressing that it would do a thorough job on the budget which it said would not be passed until mid January.

The implication is that Budget 2009 presented by President Umaru Yar’Adua two weeks ago would not be passed by the National Assembly until concurrence by the House.

The leadership of the House of Representatives represented by the Chief Whip, Honourable Emeka Ihedioha, said in passing the 2009 Budget, it might concur with the Senate on the overall figure of N3.04 trillion.

The Senate had passed the budget on Wednesday, saying it did so in the spirit of understanding with the executive arm to the effect that the budget should be passed before the end of the year.

The Chief Whip, however, denied that the position by the House amounted to a disagreement between it and the Senate, stressing that there was never a time that the relationship between the two got strained

Ihedioha, who briefed the media on the position of the House on the passage of 2009 budget, said it was incumbent on the leadership to pass a realistic budget which, according to him, the president would give assent to.

Ihedioha said although the House would want to pass the budget by January 18, there was a possibility that the process could stretch till the end of the month.
